Contracts
Who owns your content? Read the terms — do not assume.
“You always own your content” is a marketing line, not a universal legal fact. Ownership and the licence you grant are two different things.
The questions that matter
- Who owns uploaded content? Most fan platforms let creators retain ownership — but verify, because terms differ.
- What licence does the platform receive? Platforms need a licence to host and display. Some licences are broader than others (e.g. promotion, sublicensing).
- Can content be used for promotion? Many licences allow the platform to promote your content on its service.
- Can content remain after account closure? Check retention terms — some platforms remove content on deletion; others retain copies for a period.
- Can you delete it? Deletion rights and timing vary; some platforms keep content until subscriptions lapse.
- Can an agency access or reuse content? If an agency created or managed the account, check whether their contract claims rights over your content.
- Who owns the customer relationship? Platform terms generally keep the customer relationship on-platform; you cannot usually export your subscriber list.

The practical takeaway
- Read the “content” and “licence” sections of every platform you use.
- Note the licence scope — hosting is normal; broad sublicensing or perpetual promotion rights deserve attention.
- If an agency is involved, get their content-rights position in writing, separately from the platform's.
