Geo-blocking: a useful layer, not a shield.
Geo-blocking hides your profile from most people in selected countries or regions. It is worth using. It is not privacy protection by itself.
What geo-blocking actually does
- Prevents users in blocked countries/states from finding your profile in platform search.
- Blocks access to your profile page for IP addresses in blocked regions.
- Reduces the chance of casual discovery by people near you.
Some platforms offer country-only blocking; a few (for example, OnlyFans in the US, and Stripchat) add state/region granularity.
What geo-blocking does not do
- VPN bypass: anyone routing through another country's IP can see your profile. Geo-blocking is IP-based and trivially bypassed.
- Existing subscribers: people who subscribed before you added a block generally keep access.
- Travel: your content remains visible when people travel outside the blocked region.
- Cached or mirrored content: anything already screenshotted, downloaded or reposted elsewhere is outside geo-blocking's reach.
- Recognition: blocking a region does not stop someone who finds your content elsewhere from recognizing you.

Practical baseline
- Block your home country and state/region on every platform, before your first post.
- Re-check the setting after platform updates and after creating new accounts.
- Treat geo-blocking as one layer among several — work identity, metadata and background hygiene matter equally.
