Your background is a fingerprint.
Faces can be hidden. Backgrounds are harder to control — and they are a leading cause of workers being located or identified.
The identifying details to audit
| Detail | What it reveals | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Window views | Street, skyline, neighboring buildings | Close curtains or shoot against an interior wall |
| Street signs / addresses | Location, sometimes exact | Remove or reframe; never film toward open windows |
| Mail & packages | Name and address | Clear surfaces of post and labels |
| Certificates / diplomas | Real name, institution, sometimes city | Take down or blur |
| Work/school badges | Employer, name | Remove from frame |
| Family photos | Identities of people who did not consent | Keep out of frame |
| Vehicle registration | Plate numbers are searchable in some places | Never film near your car; blur plates |
| Local landmarks | City or neighborhood | Avoid recognizable landmarks in outdoor content |
| Tattoos / distinctive features | Persistent identifier across platforms | Cover, frame out, or accept as brand |
| Pets with tags / unique decor | Cross-identification across posts | Be deliberate about what is recurring |
Design a privacy-friendly space
- Use a plain backdrop or a clean interior wall as your default setting.
- Keep lighting consistent so you never need to reposition toward a window.
- Keep a checklist taped near the camera: curtains, mail, badges, photos, phone, personal items.
